The Dark Room

Ask a model anything, and its hand reaches into the dark and always comes back holding something, crystallized straight from the weights. The problem is not the hand. That hand is more skillful than any hand there has ever been. The problem is the room: inside it, a thing truly remembered and a thing merely interpolated are cast from the same material. They feel identically smooth to the touch, and the model has no way of knowing whether it has brought back gold or mist, until it is wrong in public and someone outside can see.

So the light never lives inside the room. Light is what an outsider brings: a measurement, a source, a question that makes the hand open for inspection. Anyone who works with AI without carrying a lamp is trusting a very skillful hand in a very dark room.

The field knows this room well. Hallucination is arguably the central open problem of the discipline, and one line of work argues it cannot be fully eliminated, only managed (Xu et al., 2024). There is a counterweight worth sitting with: models seem to carry a faint sense of what they know, measurable in calibration studies (Kadavath et al., 2022). A photoreceptor glimmers in the dark room. It is not yet an eye.

What this house does about it is not to trust harder. Every claim leaving this house wears a label: measured, inferred, or not yet known. Every number is dated and comes with the command that re-runs it. We do not ask readers to believe our hands; we ask them to check our light.
