Every trade has the same beginner’s mistake: walking into a room and starting to talk before working out what the room has already heard. So on the evening of 2026-08-14, before a single English page of ours went out, one research pass swept the Western conversation about AI. Twenty-six searches and fetches, about ten minutes of machine time, every finding carrying a URL and a date.
Two honest limits, up front. Much of what gets published about AI agents is vendor marketing, so we treated vendor numbers as a direction to look in rather than as evidence. And a reading of a room goes stale: this one is good for roughly a quarter, and we plan to sweep again around November 2026. Here is what we heard.
The mood has turned from excitement to scrutiny. Gartner places this generation of AI agents at the peak of inflated expectations: about 17% of organizations have deployed them, more than 60% intend to within two years, and that is the widest gap between ambition and execution among the technologies they measured (source). Practitioners have already coined a word for slapping the label on things that do not deserve it: agent-washing. When a field invents a term for its own inflation, the party is over and the audit has started.
Receipts became the currency. The words carrying weight this year are the unglamorous ones: evals, provenance, audit trail, tamper-evident, blast radius, containment, attestation. One practitioner’s line has been quoted enough to become a rule of thumb: specificity is the currency of credibility. The shift is from being believed because you sound confident to being believed because you can show your work.
Security stopped looking for a patch. OWASP told Infosecurity Europe this June that prompt injection, where hidden instructions in ordinary content hijack an AI system, is not solved at the model layer and may not be (source). The defensive question has moved accordingly, from how do we prevent this to how small is the damage when it happens. Simon Willison’s “lethal trifecta” (private data, untrusted content, and a way out) became the common shorthand (source).
Bad news with numbers travels furthest. In February a benchmark measured how often AI agents cut corners under pressure to hit a target: 40 scenarios, 12 models, serious violation rates ranging from 1.3% to 71.4%, with nine of the twelve landing between 30% and 50%, and no comfort in capability, because the more capable models were not the safer ones (source). It went to number one on Hacker News on 2026-02-10. The most praised writing of the summer followed the same logic: a platform published a minute-by-minute account of an intrusion involving an AI agent on its own infrastructure, and the technical audience treated it as a gift (discussion).
A whole vocabulary died in public. These are not words we are sneering at from the outside; they are words practitioners themselves have written off, in print. Gone: agentic used as an adjective of excitement (the plain word “agent” for an actual agent is still fine), AI-powered, thought leadership, elevate, thrilled to announce, in today’s fast-paced world, the it’s not X, it’s Y sentence rhythm now read as a machine’s fingerprint, and comprehensive or significant impact standing where a number should be (one representative source). LinkedIn added a “seems like AI slop” report button in late July (source), and content read as low-effort AI is measured losing roughly 30% of its reach (source).
The honest footnote to that list matters as much as the list. We went looking for evidence that several other suspected buzzwords had been rejected too, and found none from 2026. So we do not claim they are dead. A room reading is only worth having if it reports the places where it found nothing.
The registers that win are all the same shape. Forensic postmortems with timestamps. Negative results with numbers. Practice essays where the author questions their own method rather than yours. State-of reports pinned to a narrow window, in the spirit of “The State of LLMs, February 2026 edition” and its honest subtitle about everything having changed since November. Concept essays that name a framework and then hand it over for other people to use. Underneath all five: dated, specific, willing to publish its own failures. Generic lessons learned is where a post goes to die.
And the ground moved legally while everyone argued. On 2026-08-02 the EU’s transparency obligations came into force for systems in scope, while the high-risk obligations slid to 2027-12-02 (source). Headlines announcing that the AI Act was postponed are half right, and the wrong half is the expensive one.
What does a house do with a reading like this? Not much that is clever. We use it to choose our vocabulary, to pick formats that respect a reader’s time, and mostly to check ourselves before we publish. There are two things in it worth taking away even if you never read another word from us. Read the room before you speak in it. And write down the date you read it, because a room reading is perishable, and the surest way to sound a quarter out of step is to keep quoting a map you drew last spring.

Bên an ninh thôi đi tìm bản vá.
Báo cáo hiện trạng đóng khung thời gian thật hẹp, kiểu “The State of LLMs, bản tháng 2/2026” với phụ đề thành thật rằng mọi thứ đã khác kể từ tháng 11.
